The Scleral Buckle Procedure: What to Expect Before, During, and After
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a retinal detachment, your retina specialist may recommend a procedure called a scleral buckle. At Retina Associates of Utah, we want to ensure our patients understand what this surgery involves so you feel informed and comfortable throughout the process.
What Is a Scleral Buckle?
A scleral buckle is a surgical treatment used to repair a detached retina. During the procedure, a small band made of silicone, or another flexible material, is placed around the eye to gently push the wall of the eye inward, helping the retina reattach to its proper position.
Before the Procedure
Before your surgery, your doctor will perform a thorough eye exam and discuss the best treatment options for your specific condition. You may be advised to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before the operation, especially if general anesthesia is planned. It’s important to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.
During the Procedure
The scleral buckle surgery is typically done in a hospital or outpatient surgery center. Local or general anesthesia will be administered to keep you comfortable. Your surgeon will place the buckle around your eye and repair any retinal tears. The procedure usually takes one to two hours.
After the Procedure
Following surgery, you might experience mild discomfort, redness, or blurred vision. This is normal and usually improves within a few days. Your doctor will provide specific instructions on eye care, including using prescribed eye drops and avoiding strenuous activities. Follow-up appointments are essential to monitor healing and ensure the retina remains attached.
What Are the Benefits and Risks?
Scleral buckle surgery has a high success rate in repairing retinal detachments and preserving vision. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks such as infection, increased eye pressure, or changes in vision. Your retina specialist will discuss these risks with you beforehand and answer any questions.
